My main sense of uncertainly comes from a new consensus that the universe’s expansion is actually accelerating. This implies that the universe will keep expanding forever and not in the “big collapse” postulated in the Hawking lecture I found. I did not see any reaction on Hawking’s web site to this news, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t publicly accept the findings somewhere else. Or he might have discounted them.
