AASL Conducts National Surveys on the Branding of School Librarianship
In order to refresh the image of school librarians and school library programs, AASL conducted two national surveys to examine the brands of the profession. The surveys one focused towards members of the school librarian profession and one focused towards educational stakeholders will determine what the brands “school librarian,” “L4L” and “@your library” mean to current and future school library professionals and educational stakeholders.
What especially gave me pause was “L4L.” I know a number of school librarians. I belong to the Alaska School Librarians group on Facebook. But I never heard the term “L4L” before I saw it in Mr. Fiels’ report.
But being a good librarian, I could find out. It turns out that L4L is the abbreviation of the Learning 4 Life initiative of the American Association of School Librarians. Here’s an intro from the front page:
In this dynamic age, students have unprecedented access to diverse and independent information resources. Learning has taken on new dimensions with the expansion of information and rapidly changing research and communication tools.
With a heightened demand for critical thinking and collaborative problem solving, students must develop the skills to become lifelong learners. School librarians are in a key position to help guide students to make sense of new information in order to draw their own conclusions, create new knowledge, and share their knowledge with others in an increasingly global society.
I agree with all this. In my context book assignment for the Hyperlinked Library MOOC, I asserted that school librarians were key to building a better network of netizens. I wish this initiative well though it seems like building awareness outside of the school librarian community remains a challenge.
